There is no account and no sign-in, and nothing we hold says who you are. This page covers the website and the Android and iPhone apps, which are the same app. Almost everything you do in it - the people you walk with, the walks you save, the ones you log - is kept on your own phone or browser and stays there. The few things that do reach us are listed below under What you send us, with what we keep of each.

There is no advertising and no tracking across sites or apps. We count visits to the website with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which sets no cookies, stores nothing on your device and does not identify you: it tells us how many people visited and roughly where from, and that is all.

What is stored on your device

In your browser's local storage (in the app, the same storage inside the app), mostly under names starting coffeeandwalks. and coffeewalks.. The ones that matter:

KeyWhat it holds
coffeeandwalks.crewwho is walking with you — pram, wheelchair, toddler, dog and so on
coffeeandwalks.whothe older single-person version of the same setting
coffeeandwalks.savedwalks you bookmarked, with the coffee stop you chose
coffeeandwalks.logwalks you marked as done, with the date
coffeeandwalks.ratingsstars you have given to walks and coffee places
coffeeandwalks.themelight, dark or match my device
coffeeandwalks.basemapwhich map style you last used
coffeewalks.devicea random code made on your device, sent with ratings - see below
coffeewalks.regionwhich country or state you last looked at

The app also keeps a copy of walk and cafe data it has downloaded, so a walk you looked at at home still opens on the trail without signal. That is the same public data everybody gets, not anything about you.

None of this is sent anywhere except as described below. Clearing the site data (on the web) or uninstalling the app deletes all of it, and so does Delete my data in the You tab.

Your location

If you allow it, your phone or browser gives the app your position. It is used on the device to sort walks by distance and to show where you are, and it is not stored.

To time the drive to a walk and its coffee stop, the app sends the start point and the stops - as coordinates, nothing else - to our route server, which works out the road route and sends it back. The start point is often where you are. The server does not store or log it: it answers and forgets. If you would rather not, set a different starting point (a town, or a point on the map) and that is what is sent instead.

You can refuse location altogether and the app still works: search for a place or pick a point on the map.

Other people's servers

Opening the app makes requests to the places its parts come from. Those services see your IP address and what you asked for, as any website's would. They are:

WhoWhy, and when
Cloudflare
coffeewalks.ie, tiles.coffeewalks.ie
the app itself on the web, the map, and walk data for places outside Ireland - as you look at them
Fly.io
our route server
drive times, trail notes and ratings - see above and below
Esri ArcGISthe satellite map, only if you switch to it
Wikimedia Commonswalk photographs, when a walk with photos is opened
Nominatim (OpenStreetMap)only when you search for a place by name
Google Placesonly if you tap to fetch a shop's live Google rating
Google Maps
Apple Maps
only when you tap Let's go - you are leaving the app at that point

Nothing about you is attached to any of those requests beyond what any website or app is sent.

What you send us

WhatWhenWhat we keep
Ratingswhen you log a walk and give it, or its coffee, stars the stars and which walk or cafe, with a scrambled form of the random device code so one phone counts once. Shown to everyone as an average. The code is not linked to you, your name or your phone number.
Trail noteswhen you log a walk and tick how it was (muddy, a locked gate...) the note, the walk and the day, shown to others. We keep no record of who sent it.
Photosonly if you tick Offer it for this walk when you log one the picture, made smaller, and the walk. We look at it before anyone else can see it. Its location is not sent - only whether it was taken near the walk.
Countswhen you open a walk in Maps or log one a running total per day. No identifier, no address.

To stop one phone flooding notes or photos, the server works out a scrambled fingerprint of your connection (your IP address, mixed with a secret that is thrown away whenever the server restarts). For notes and ratings it is held in memory only; with a photo waiting for review it is kept beside it, and cannot be turned back into your address.

If you want a rating, note or photo you sent removed, email hello@coffeewalks.ie with the walk and roughly when.

The phone app waitlist

If you join the waitlist at coffeewalks.ie/join, we keep the email address you typed, which phone you said you have (if you picked one), where you found the link (for example TikTok), and the day you joined. Nothing else.

It is used for one thing: to tell you when the app is in the App Store and Google Play, plus the odd launch update. It is not shared, sold or added to anything else, and it is kept on our own server, not a mailing service. Ask to be taken off, by emailing hello@coffeewalks.ie, and it is deleted, along with everything stored with it.

Where the walk data comes from

Suitability scores are derived from surface, gradient and barrier tags. They are a strong hint, not a survey, and the app says so wherever it shows one.

Google ratings

Ratings shown from Google are fetched live at the moment you ask for one and are not stored, because Google's terms do not permit storing them.

Children

The app is built for people planning outings with prams and toddlers, but it is used by the adult doing the planning. It is not directed at children and asks nobody's age.

Changes, and getting in touch

If this page changes, the date at the top changes with it. Questions about anything here can go to hello@coffeewalks.ie.
